On 27th October 2016 Haguruka, in partnership with Hivos, convened a round table at Portofino Villa Hotel in Kigali to deliberate on issues of women leadership in Rwanda horticulture sector.
The round table was organized by Haguruka as part of a campaign dubbed “WOMEN @WORK” that aims to improve working conditions for women who earn their living through global production chains, most notably flowers, vegetable and fruits in Rwanda. It aims to do so by collaborating with business enterprises and government institutions to influence value chain dialogues to create sustainable improvements for women workers who comprise the majority of workforce in the sector.
The round table also aimed to bring on board workers and their representative trade unions, women’s rights organizations, CSOs with an interest in horticulture, lobby groups and business players and their associations, in order to create a draft strategy on Women’s Leadership in the Rwandan Horticulture Sector, within particular emphasis on the needs identified by these sector players. The round table also provided an opportunity to identify possible country partners (CSOs, private sector players, unions etc).
