Duteze Imbere Ubutabera (DIU)

Duteze Imbere Ubutabera (DIU)

Objective: Duteze Imbere Ubutabera (DIU), or “let’s promote access to justice,” was a project in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and other legal aid providers in Rwanda to increase access to justice. Specifically, the project focused on five districts: Musanze, Nyaruguru, Gasabo, Bugesera, and Nyamasheke Districts––and contributed to improved judicial effectiveness in both formal court mechanisms and community justice (Abunzi), and to an improved public understanding of judicial system processes and legal rights.

Project Year

February 2018 – December 2020

Impact

Through this partnership, Haguruka conducted 117 mobile legal clinics in Musanze, Nyaruguru, Gasabo, Bugesera, and Nyamasheke Districts. Haguruka provided legal aid to 1,450 GBV victims under the support of this project and 198 GBV victims were provided with legal representation before the courts of law. As a result of this project, research reports related to mapping out GBV service providers and assessment of justice chains were published.
