This project, titled “Développer la Science forensique au profit de la Justice Rwandaise,” is a partnership between Haguruka and the French Embassy. Operating in the Ngoma and Bugesera districts of the Eastern Province, the project aims to enhance the application of forensic science in Rwanda to strengthen justice delivery, particularly for victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). It addresses critical gaps such as weak application of forensic evidence, lack of psychosocial support, and financial barriers to justice.
The project focuses on capacity building for stakeholders – including RIB and healthcare workers – in forensic evidence collection and the chain of custody. A key activity is assisting teenage mothers with DNA testing, which serves as vital evidence in legal proceedings to establish paternity and secure child rights. For example, the project successfully used DNA testing to confirm paternity in a case where a father had initially denied his child, leading to the child’s legal registration and the father’s acceptance of parental responsibilities. Beyond legal aid, the project provides psychosocial support to help victims manage the emotional trauma associated with GBV.
