Lantmateriet: Land Administration Capacity Development

The Lantmäteriet project, funded by SIDA and running from 2018 to 2027, focuses on capacity development in land administration across Rwanda. It addresses critical issues such as low awareness of land rights among women and the legal vulnerabilities of women in informal unions. The aim is to empower local leaders and citizens to claim and protect their land rights effectively.

Key activities include training local leaders and conducting community dialogues. To date, the project has covered 16 of Rwanda’s 30 districts, training 2,887 leaders and engaging over 11,000 citizens. Training topics include land ownership registration, equal rights for men and women, and peaceful conflict resolution. Achievements include 96 training sessions that have shifted the perspectives of village leaders and women’s representatives, helping them understand the legal necessity of formal land transactions and the rights of women in informal unions. Future plans involve establishing a monitoring system to track the application of this knowledge and including Abunzi in future training modules.
